Our expert fans understand the technical ratings of ABV and IBUs, but here's a little explanation for those new to the world of craft brewing.

International Bittering Units, or IBUs, are a measurement of the bitterness of a beer. Hops are responsible for bittering and this measurement compared with your personal preference for hop flavor will help you know which beers you want to try. Though there are other characteristics like the balancing malt sweetness of a brew that affect overall bitterness, you can generally assume that brews with an IBU of less than 20 will have little to no hop presence. 20 to 45 IBUs are most common in craft brewing and have a mild to moderate hop presence. Greater than 45 IBUs are heavily hopped and are for the hoppiest fans around.

Alcohol by Volume, or ABV, is the common measure of how much alcohol is contained in an alcoholic beverage, and is the standard used worldwide. The higher the ABV, the more alcohol in the beer.
